In a recent experiment, brand leaders were presented with two AI-generated advertisements—featuring polished but hollow avatars—and one video of a real franchisee recounting her personal transition from a burnt-out healthcare worker to a business owner. While the AI content failed to elicit any emotional response, the authentic testimonial resonated immediately. This gap between synthetic production and human narrative is precisely where brand trust resides.
Data from eMarketer suggests that visible AI in marketing is four times more likely to erode trust than to build it. Beyond the perception issue, there are significant legal hazards. The Federal Trade Commission now imposes civil penalties exceeding $53,000 per violation for fake testimonials, and the U.S. Copyright Office maintains that purely AI-generated material lacks copyright protection. Brands that substitute real people with digital proxies risk both their reputation and their intellectual property.
