Emergency Physicians Top List of Highest-Paid 'Scary' U.S. Jobs

With a median annual salary of $335,550, emergency room physicians command the highest pay among professions associated with danger, death, or disease. New data from the career platform resume.io identifies these roles by assigning a fear score based on physical hazards, exposure to infection, and the critical consequences of error.

The study examined 23 occupations, awarding a 'scary' designation to any role scoring 40 or higher on a 100-point scale. Emergency room physicians reached the top of the list, scoring a perfect 100 in exposure to disease while maintaining an overall fear score of 64.8. This compensation package sits 558% above the national median, though it arrives with heavy barriers to entry. According to the Education Data Initiative, new medical graduates face an average debt burden of $227,514, reflecting the steep financial commitment required to reach such positions.

Pathologists and police detectives rounded out the top three highest-paying roles in the analysis. Pathologists earned a median salary of $312,400 with a fear score of 49.2, while police detectives commanded $93,790 with a significantly higher fear score of 60.3. Amanda Augustine, a career expert at resume.io, noted that high danger does not guarantee high pay. Many physically demanding and hazardous roles across the country remain below the national average income, suggesting that the largest salaries are reserved for those who pair high-stakes risk with years of specialized, expensive education.
