Tech Sector Sheds Jobs While Pouring Billions Into AI Infrastructure
US technology firms announced 38,242 job cuts in May, marking the highest monthly total in nearly two years. While the industry leads the nation in layoffs, reaching 123,653 reductions so far in 2026, the sector simultaneously maintains the most aggressive hiring plans of any major business category.

Despite the downsizing, the sector is fueling a massive wave of investment. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have committed a combined $725 billion to AI infrastructure this year, a 77% increase over previous spending levels. These organizations are not shrinking their operations; they are actively rotating their workforce, discarding legacy roles to prioritize specialized talent capable of building and managing advanced AI systems.
