That early move from legal work into corporate management set a long-term direction. For the next twenty years, until leaving all TAIF- and SIBUR-related positions in 2022, Shigabutdinov’s career remained tied to TAIF and its main industrial assets.
Working Within the TAIF Group
In 2005 Shigabutdinov became deputy general director for corporate property management and investments at TAIF. He kept that job for fourteen years. During this period, he also took over the board of Kazanorgsintez — he chaired it from 2013 right up to 2022. The plant produces polymers and polyethylene, and throughout those years it was going through a serious modernization push. In 2017 he also became chairman of the board at Nizhnekamskneftekhim, another large petrochemical company within the TAIF group. At the time both plants were modernizing their facilities and increasing production.
In 2019 he took over as general director of TAIF JSC. That September, in his role as CEO, he attended the opening of the Transneft-Sintez plant in the Alabuga special economic zone. The factory makes anti-turbulence additives for oil pipelines. Several officials attended — the prime minister of Tatarstan, a Russian deputy energy minister, the head of Transneft, and a few others. Shigabutdinov’s presence was mentioned in public reporting.
The Merger and the Exit from SIBUR
In 2021, a significant part of TAIF’s petrochemical and energy business was brought into the perimeter of the transaction with SIBUR, the gas processing and petrochemicals major. As part of the deal, Shigabutdinov entered the management boards of PJSC SIBUR Holding and LLC SIBUR for a transition period. He also took on the role of deputy chairman of TAIF’s board of directors in 2022.
