Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has rapidly scaled its consumption-based revenue model. The company reported $16.29 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, a sharp climb from $4.59 billion in 2025. However, this expansion is tethered to heavy spending on computing power and data center capacity. Operating losses hit $693 million in the first half of 2026, following an $8.06 billion loss in 2025.
The firm’s infrastructure strategy relies on a $500 billion commitment over the next decade, much of it funneled back to its own primary investors. Amazon and Google are both top shareholders and major cloud providers, with Anthropic pledging at least $110 billion to Amazon and $114.5 billion to Google for cloud services. This circular financing structure allows the startup to maintain its status as a public benefit corporation, a legal framework that requires the company to balance investor returns with the ethical development of AI.
