When launching Desert Forge Ventures, an early-stage fund for the Las Vegas ecosystem, the temptation was to wait for total clarity. Instead, I sought out experts—including contacts in Silicon Valley and Tucson—who could challenge my assumptions rather than validate them. This process highlights a critical distinction: analysis is valuable until it becomes a tool for postponing action. Once you have a sufficient signal, you must move.
Flexibility remains essential during the execution phase. My initial investments in deep tech labs forced me to confront the difference between reversible decisions and those that create rigid obligations for others. When capital requirements outpaced our fundraising, I had to recalibrate our communication and timelines immediately. Now, every consequential commitment is pressure-tested against five specific variables, including what smallest move I can make and which specific evidence would force me to pivot.
