Vuyisich spent years navigating the limitations of conventional medicine, which offered little relief for his worsening joint pain. By rigorously reviewing literature on low-grade inflammation, he identified a potential link between his symptoms and Neu5Gc, a sugar molecule found in red meat and dairy. After eliminating these from his diet, his symptoms vanished. Though he notes this remains anecdotal evidence rather than clinical proof, the personal breakthrough prompted him to challenge a healthcare system he views as reactive rather than preventative.
Following a life path that led from poverty in communist Yugoslavia to a PhD and a role at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Vuyisich shifted his professional focus in 2010. Partnering with entrepreneur Naveen Jain, he co-founded Viome to move beyond basic DNA testing. The company utilizes RNA sequencing to monitor the activity of gut microorganisms, aiming to identify root causes of illness before they manifest as full-blown conditions. Vuyisich draws a parallel between his work and aviation maintenance, arguing that human health should be managed through proactive, systematic inspections of physiological triggers rather than waiting for symptomatic failure.
