Construction leads the pack, with 67% of business owners having skipped a university education. This sector proves lucrative for those willing to trade classrooms for job sites; according to ZipRecruiter, annual salaries in this field can reach $339,500, with an average intake of $127,973. This trend mirrors the path of icons like Steve Jobs, who left Reed College to launch Apple, though modern founders are increasingly finding their footing in more localized, service-oriented trades.

Following construction, the personal, home, and automotive services industry claims 64% of non-graduate ownership. The transportation and warehousing sector rounds out the top three at 62%. These findings from OnDeck underscore a shift in professional trajectories, where practical experience and specialized trade skills frequently outweigh traditional academic credentials in terms of both market viability and financial return.
