Pickleball Franchisor The Picklr Files for Bankruptcy

The rapid expansion of the pickleball industry met a harsh reality this week as The Picklr filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Despite the sport's massive popularity, the company buckled under the weight of excessive corporate lease guarantees, leaving its founder to navigate a precarious financial restructuring in Texas court.

CEO Jorge Barragan attributed the collapse to over-leveraging, specifically citing the decision to personally guarantee lease payments for approximately 40 early franchise locations. "We signed, unfortunately, too many corporate guarantees that landed on the holding company, and that’s on us," Barragan stated. "I own it."

Founded in 2021, the firm scaled aggressively, expanding to more than 70 locations across the U.S. and international markets including Australia, Canada, and Japan. Financial records reveal a $4.4 million net loss on $10.3 million in revenue during 2025, with total liabilities reaching $19 million by March. To stabilize operations, an investor group led by franchisee Tom Neale has pledged $4.5 million in financing. While the company maintains that existing clubs will stay open, Barragan indicated that some downsizing remains inevitable as the business attempts to emerge from the bankruptcy process.
