Four individuals familiar with the organization’s inner workings suggest the WEF’s Board of Trustees may finalize the appointment during a November 2 meeting. While no formal decision is locked, the 70-year-old former French finance minister reportedly holds broad support among the 27 board members. Should the transition proceed, it would trigger a cascade of vacancies within the ECB’s six-member Executive Board, coming on the heels of Isabel Schnabel’s recent resignation and the upcoming May departure of Chief Economist Philip Lane.
Christine Lagarde Eyed for WEF Chair Amid ECB Reshuffle Speculation
The World Economic Forum is positioning Christine Lagarde to take over as its next chair as early as November, a move that would force an early exit from the European Central Bank and ignite a complex scramble for top-tier financial appointments across the European Union.

This potential shift is driven by political calculus in Paris and Brussels. Lagarde’s departure before the formal end of her term in 2027 would allow French President Emmanuel Macron to influence the selection of his successor before his term concludes in May. European officials fear that a victory by far-right leader Marine Le Pen in France’s spring presidential election would complicate any future consensus on top EU roles. Consequently, member states are eyeing a package deal to fill the ECB presidency and associated vacancies, with former Dutch and Spanish central bank governors Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernandez de Cos currently viewed as primary contenders for the top post.
