Chinese Bank Lending Rebounds as Stimulus Efforts Take Hold

Chinese banks issued 1.08 trillion yuan in new loans during September, a sharp recovery from the 60 billion yuan recorded in August. This surge, which outpaced analyst expectations of 975 billion yuan, arrives as Beijing intensifies monetary support to counteract a persistent economic slowdown and sluggish domestic demand.

The rebound in credit issuance, driven in part by seasonal quarter-end targets, offers a potential signal that recent government interventions are gaining traction. Despite this monthly uptick, the broader financial picture remains tempered by caution. Outstanding yuan loans grew by 4.8% year-on-year, matching a record low, while total social financing growth slipped to 7.1% from 7.2% in August.

Analysts remain skeptical regarding the long-term impact of these measures. Fitch Ratings noted that while the latest policy package—featuring targeted rate cuts and mortgage subsidies—may improve credit transmission, it is unlikely to fundamentally alter the property sector’s trajectory or ignite a significant surge in broader credit demand. With M2 money supply growth hitting an 18-month low of 7.2%, investors are now turning their attention to upcoming third-quarter GDP data, due October 19, to determine if the economy has found a stable footing.
