Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, analyzed millions of problem-solving sessions between 2015 and 2025. By comparing student performance before and after the 2022 launch of ChatGPT, the team identified a sharp decline in student persistence. While performance on visual, interactive graphing tasks remained stable, students struggled significantly on word problems when stripped of AI assistance during exams.
Sina Rismanchian, the lead Ph.D. candidate on the study, noted that AI allows students to bypass the essential step-by-step cognitive labor required for long-term mastery. This phenomenon is echoed in adult studies, where participants who relied on language models were more likely to abandon challenging logic problems they were otherwise capable of solving. Georgetown cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Adam Green compares this to an evolutionary impulse to conserve energy; the brain naturally avoids the "productive struggle" when a shortcut is available.
