Starting in the third quarter, the new accounting method will reshape how the group reports its financial strength. The change follows CEO Andrea Orcel’s strategic move to internalize the bank’s domestic life insurance operations. By buying out partners Allianz and CNP Assurances last year, Orcel aimed to capture a greater share of fee income, effectively consolidating the business under the group's direct control.
UniCredit Secures Capital Boost via Danish Compromise Approval
The European Central Bank has authorized UniCredit to apply the 'Danish Compromise' to its insurance holdings, a regulatory shift that allows the Milan-based lender to risk-weight these investments instead of fully deducting them from capital reserves. The bank expects this transition to lift its core capital ratio by 50 basis points.

Originally conceived during Denmark’s rotating EU presidency, the Danish Compromise was once a temporary relief measure before being codified into permanent law. For UniCredit, this regulatory adjustment provides a meaningful lift to its balance sheet, offering greater flexibility as the bank continues its push to expand its insurance-related revenue streams.
