Uber Launches Real-Time Video Monitoring for Teen Passengers

Parents can now peer into their teenager’s Uber ride via a live video stream transmitted directly from the driver’s phone. The feature, intended to offer guardians peace of mind, allows them to watch the journey in real time, provided the driver has opted into the system’s recording protocols.

The integration connects a teen’s account to their guardian’s, triggering a notification the moment a trip begins. Once active, parents access a livestream captured by the driver’s front-facing camera. To ensure transparency, both the teen and the driver receive alerts whenever a guardian initiates a viewing session, and the feed terminates automatically upon arrival.

Privacy safeguards restrict the data flow significantly. The encrypted video is stored on company servers, and Uber maintains that it cannot access the feed in real time. Decryption keys remain locked unless a formal safety incident is reported, and recordings expire after 14 days. Currently, the service is available in nine markets, including Atlanta, Phoenix, and Orlando, with a nationwide rollout scheduled for the coming weeks. Drivers retain full control over the feature and may disable it at any time.
