The current landscape for brand visibility has moved away from the traditional model where all roads lead to your own domain. Research from Muck Rack, which analyzed over 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, shows that earned media accounts for 84% of AI citations. Journalism alone captures 27%, while paid placements register at a negligible 0.3%. Machines prioritize coverage that cannot be bought, trusting trade publications and niche industry sites over promotional marketing copy.
Video and podcast transcripts serve as another primary signal. A study of 75,000 brands by Ahrefs identified YouTube mentions as the strongest metric for visibility, as models ingest these transcripts at scale. Beyond media, review platforms like G2, Capterra, or Trustpilot act as critical validators for AI. Because models prefer neutral, structured opinions from third parties, active participation on these sites—including responding to customer reviews—is essential for building a credible profile.
